Drone RFID Reader Project for Atkins Hits the Press

DTA and Atkins engineers underneath the M25 QE2 bridge at Dartford during the drone RFID reader demonstration

A unique and highly innovative project with Atkins saw Drone Tech Aerospace develop a drone-borne RFID reader system with telemetry to ground: an early example of using drones to capture asset-tagged data remotely rather than sending inspectors to reach it by hand.

The first deployment to demonstrate the technology's capabilities was conducted at the M25 QE2 bridge in Dartford, Kent. Coverage of the project subsequently appeared in trade and technology publications across the UK, the USA, France, Germany and Spain, a level of press interest that reflected just how novel the drone-and-RFID combination was at the time.
